Dear IGS Colleagues:
It is with great sadness that we communicate the death of our dear friend, Prof. Benedito Bueno. He passed away on 1 August 2015 in Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, São Paulo, Brazil, where he lived with his family.
Prof. Bueno retired from his professional activities a few years ago, but his work remains very present in the technical community. His projects and ideas have inspired engineering minds and generated important contributions to field, both through his work with students and with colleagues at the Engineering School of São Carlos, University of São Paulo (USP). Among his many contributions, Prof. Bueno was the founder and director of the USP’s renowned Geosynthetics Laboratory. The facility has been extremely important to the geosynthetics industry in Brazil.
Prof. Bueno studied at USP and earned his Civil Eng. and MSc in Geotechnical Engineering. He then went to the University of Leeds (England) and achieved his Ph.D. His professional life brought him to the Federal University of Viçosa, where he helped found the school’s Post-Graduate Program in Civil Engineering. He served as the program’s coordinator until 1996 when he went to São Carlos to found the geosynthetics laboratory.
The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) benefited greatly from Prof. Bueno’s energy and dedication. With IGS Brazil, Prof. Bueno was particularly influential. He served as IGS Brazil’s president from 2003 through 2007, which was a period of strong growth and achievements for the chapter and the Brazilian industry. He was integral in bringing the 9th International Conference on Geosynthetics (9 ICG) to Guarujá in 2010. In 2013, IGS Brazil made Prof. Bueno an honorary member. And just last month, during the 7th Brazilian Congress on Geosynthetics in Brasilia, Prof. Bueno was honored with a plaque for his many contributions to the development of geosynthetics in the country.
Prof. Bueno leaves behind his wife Elizabeth, three children (Lygia, José Victor, and Eduardo), and a large number of friends and admirers.
We wish, on behalf of all the geosynthetic community, that our great friend rests in peace and that his family and friends find comfort at the many good memories he left as a gift to us.
